In some ways I agree, in some ways I don't.
I agree that these athletes are way overpaid. And if they put a cap on the salaries, they might all threaten to quit, but then what are they going to do? It's not like they have any other skills, and they CERTAINLY don't have other skills that will make them millionaires.
On the other hand, do you realize how much money is brought in by professional sports? Billions upon billions of dollars. And I'd rather see the guys that are actually playing the sport reap the benefits than some greedy guy sitting in an office.
What they *definitely* need to do, though, is stop ripping off the fans with exorbitant ticket and souvenir prices. In that respect, the players and the guys in the office are all greedy.

Barbara,
I agree with the foundation of your question and as you know - as long as the fan base is purchasing the tickets, memorabilia, jerseys, hats, etc., then I for one do not foresee an end to the salaries or their continued increases.
Teachers, Engineers, Nurses, and others who contribute so much to our way of life have been way underpaid for too long. I have to admit I am guilty with all of NHL stuff I have and as you know my College team is USC. The salaries as you know are fed by fans, the greedy owners who would also like to lower the salaries, and Unions who really only look out for the Union - in ANY major league sport, agents, and ohhhh those statisticians, Yards Ran, Home Run Hits, Slap Shot tally's and the infamous +/- ratings, and Free Throw stats to name but a few.
On New Years Day I will be sporting my newest USC shirt, then during the Stanley Cup Finals I will be flying my "CUP" flag outside of the house. Yeah, I am guilty but I acknowledge the importance of your question.

There is sooo much money being made in this industry. Regardless of how much they get paid, the money is still being made.
If there are millions of dollars being made for what the athletes are doing, why shouldn't they get a large chunk. Why should they work hard and let the industry take it?
There a lots of athletes that contribute to the needy, as well as giving back to neighborhoods that need a face lift as well as community uplifting.
Like Magic Johnson for example.

It's not a question of need..it's a question of want..that explains the $70,000 Cadillac pick-up that will never see a load of rock and dirt on it's back... besides, wouldn't it be foolish to be the reason for generating billions in sales for the promoters and not get a slice of the pie?

the day all of america takes intirest in a serious issure like world hunger or air pollution and realizes that outragious amount of money should go towards more important things.
these people are making hundreds of millions every year, when they could be just fine making 25-30,000 a year.

Americans are dumb... as long as they are willing to pay exorbitant prices for tickets to games and to pay more for team marked items, the athletes will be overpaid... not as overpaid as the owners though...
