I have noticed this, too, with my pictures (really hideous).
I think this is sometimes something to do with light and how it diffuses and reflects.
I recently bought a new camera and wanted to get some nice pictures of myself. I liked how I looked in the mirror, but when my friend took a picture of me it looked awful. Then, he took a picture of me through the mirror (taking a picture of my reflection) and it looked like what I saw in the mirror.
Just like in professional photo studios, they have those umbrellas to alter the direct light, I think the mirror must be doing something like that.
Cameras also don't always capture things truly as they are - and I'm sure you've noticed this. Colors sometimes aren't true - the lighting may seem lighter or darker in a photograph than it was in real life. And if you use flash, that, of course, is going to change things.
To get a really good photograph of yourself, sometimes you have to take tons of pictures and try different lighting and angles and camera settings (no one looks good in a picture taken with flash). This isn't true just for you... this is true for everyone - even models... they take hundreds of pictures at a photo-shoot just to get one or two really good ones.
Don't lose heart. With trial and error you will find what lighting works best for you, how to angle your face and body to get the nicest photographic results.

when your taking a picture you are probably in bad lighting, practice your facial expressions in the mirror for pictures, which way your head should be placed, and the rest of your body. proffessionals do the best job for pictures, they have good quality cameras, everyday pictures won't always be nice with a cheaper camera. im not photogenic, but when i got my senior pics. done by a professional they were really nice.

OK a lesson in life...
The mirror is not a true resemblance of YOU. It's the OPPOSITE of what you look like. When you raise your right hand while looking in the mirror, the mirror says its your left. A MIRROR IMAGE,
A camera takes a picture of the REAL you.
Get a friend to take some nice simple pictures of you and study them. Then compare them to the Mirror Image. You will see TWO different people
