Because Hiroshima and Nagasaki were two of Japan's biggest cities and the atomic bomb completely destroyed them. Also hundreds of thousands of Japs died because of the bombs. If they didn't surrender we would have dropped more bombs and they didn't want that.

Japan was in the process of surrendering before the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. There was a strong faction that was looking to end the war with honor. According to some historians Japan would have surrendered with the only condition being that the Emperor would remain. In the three days between Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Japanese were issuing the necessary orders to enact a surrender. It takes time and organization to surrender a nation, and the US didn't give Japan a lot between the two attacks. Some argue that it would have only taken 1-3 more days after the first bomb before Japan surrendered unconditionally.
Also keep in mind that national pride was involved. Japan didn't want to end up like post WWI- Germany with a shattered economy, heavy war debt, large reparations payments, and extreme limits on the type and size of economic development. For several months the US had been flying 'strategic' bombing missions that were leveling Japanese cities, killing thousands and leaving tens of thousands homeless and destitute. Initial reports from Hiroshima didn't indicate anything other than another bombing raid. Atomic weapons were new to warfare. Few knew or understood the power and danger that they posed. Taking a few days to understand what was going on is understandable.

The Japanese kept to the code of no surrender
this was show by the extremely low amount of Japanese taken as POWs
It took the second bomb to make the leadership realise that if the war continued the entire of Japan might be destroyed
The Japanese thought after Hiroshuma that the Americans would have only had one bomb with that devastating power, after the second it made them think the Americans had multiple of these bombs (when they really only had two)
The dropping of the two bombs very much saved lives rather than destroy it - the estimated casulties for a military takeover of Japan was 1 million US soldiers with an unknown amount of Japanese military and civilian casulties. The bombs killed thousands, but they prevented the death of millions

They were dithering around, debating how they could surrender with "honor," while "saving face," and the second atomic bomb convinced them to hurry up and surrender while they still had a few big cities left.

You mean Japanese, the war was over before the first bomb was dropped, the Americans did not want to have to physically invade Japan because they took a pounding from the entrenched Japanese army in the south pacific, so they decided to drop the A-Bombs instead.

Because the Japanese government was fearful of loosing more people and more land to nuclear contamination. Also, the united states government told japan that we had a 3rd bomb (we didnt) and they feared we would drop it.

I think it was "shock and awe" and they hadn't recovered from the shock yet. I also think the Japanese hierarchy believed the emperor was a god. For them to surrender they would have to admit it wasn't true.
