I'd say its better being a kid now but in the current climate it was definitely a lot safer years ago.
I'm 35yrs old now and school was exactly the same then.We had sarcastic teachers and couldn't drop out easily even though i don't know why you would want to drop out and as for getting good grades i think there was more pressure on us then as the system now tends to help you more with a job search.

Kids nowadays do have it "better" than we did when we were kids. We didn't have cable television. A remote ? Us kids were the remote !!! We had 2 channels to watch. Maybe 3 if the weather was clear, and the antenna could pull in a half way decent signal. I remember many times trying to watch a show through all that "snow" on the television!
The only way you could drop out of school is if you were pregnant, or if you were 18 years old.
We didn't have cell phones, computers, no instant messaging chat/text with your friends 24/7. We had ONE phone in our house, and it was in the kitchen where everyone in the household could hear your conversation.
School delays/cancellations.....We went to school when it was snowing, sleeting and rain/fog. I remember many times falling on the icy road trying to get on that bus. We also got paddled at school when we misbehaved. We also got it when we got home. No parents ever sued the school system because their child was a brat or refused to follow the rules.
We didn't have seat belts either. We had to get used to wearing those things in the 90's or be fined !
We could go outside and play and not worry if someone was going to snatch us up. We would be outside all day and didn't want to hang around inside with our parents...
We also didn't have VCR's or DVD's. No renting movies or taping your show on television that you were too busy to watch. You made sure you were home the night that Charlie Brown was on TV because you wouldn't get to watch it until next year.
So, yes I do agree with your parents about you having it much better than we did.

So, you're looking for unbiassed answers, as long as they're biassed to your way of thinking....
Hmmm...
When I was at school, we had to stay at school. We had to get good grades. Guess what? We had sarcastic teachers. (Yes, you Mr Collins, and you Mr Smith, and yes, Mr McAulay, I remember your biting sarcasm too.) We couldn't easily drop out, either. So no change there.
What we COULD do is play in the streets. Skipping-ropes, kick-the-can, hot-peas-and-barley-o, tag, hopscotch. No solitary games played in front of a computer screen in the bedroom, but social games with other children, sometimes over a dozen at a time. That's the one thing you rarely see these days -- children playing in the streets. When did you last see a child playing with a gird? Do you even know what one is?
That's what you're worse off for these days.
And here's a sure fire bet. In thirty years' time, you'll be telling your children about how tough it was in your day, and how easy they have it now.

When I was a kid, in the 60's, We lived in the country. We never locked our doors, you could keep the keys in the car, We never even thought about getting abducted by weirdo's, or having to really watch out for strangers. all of our neighbors were like our own family almost. we could just walk down the road by ouselves to go trick or treating on Halloween, we could ride our bicycles or dirt bikes for miles. If you had trouble, people would actualy help you, instead of ignoring you. But kids were better, then too. We didnt ever go around vandalizing stuff or breaking into peoples houses, we didnt bring guns to school and shoot our classmates, most kids were in scouts, or sports, if neighbors need help, the kids would go help them, The whole world was different then, I miss those times. Now I have to lock my car, and house, chase kids out of my yard who are up to who knows what, Keep the homeless people out of my shed, put up a high fence to keep troublemakers out of my property, so i wont be sued if some intruder breaks his leg breaking into my garage. It is a different world now, I wish the kids of today could experience how it was then, But I wish the kids would be more respectful, and kind today, too.

Well, there wasn't the worry about AIDs then.
And we went outside to play, instead of sitting on the couch.
But was it "better"? No, I don't think so. The opportunities for knowledge and getting involved are huge for kids now. There is sooo much more to do, to know, to experience. I'd take the complexities of this modern world in exchange for what it offers.

Better for kids now?
I think it's much scarier to be a kid in school these days. You see stories of teachers molesting their students, kids bringing guns to school, etc.
Although I'm not sure how old your parents are, mine told me stories about getting hit with rules, having to write perfectly, etc.
It's hard for every generation. Some people just have better ideals than others.

There are definitely things which are better for kids today: better health care, more choices, more entertainment choices. But these advantages are not unique to kids. Adults today are also better off than adults were several generations ago.

I think in school i may have had it easy. I definately had it easy when taking my driving test, compared to kids now. You do have some things better then what was around when i was young. I feel more scared for my children growing up, than what i felt myself when growing up.

I'm only 27 but it isn't easier for you guys by far.Y'all constantly have to be better than us with less time to do it in and also they've totally made school work harder than for us and I was in honors and AP classes. Also we never really worried about our friends blowing us away either.

I'm older and I think it was much better when I was a kid. Less pressures and we could actually play outside and not worry about getting nabbed. Much less pressure to grow up so fast.
