He lives in Texas, and I don't get to see him all that often, so, I don't really have a good idea of what he's into. His mother only tells me what she WANTS him to like, not what he actually likes. I thought a gift card to Barnes & Noble would be OK so he can get a book (he likes to read) or a CD of his choice - is that too impersonal? I really hate to give him a 'generic' gift, but if I get him something he will think is really 'cool' I run the risk of my sister not letting him have it (she is Uber Strict).

I wouldn't even try to guess what a 14 year old boy would want for Christmas, so a gift card or cash are good ideas. Gift cards sometimes have expiration dates and they are limited to a specific store. But by giving either a gift card or cash, you avoid displeasing either the recipient or his mother.

14-yr-olds love money and gift cards because they like the power to choose exactly what they want. Not only that, they enjoy the shopping expedition. Go for it! He'll love it. Inserting the gift card or money in a greeting card that will leave him rolling in the floor would be an extra nice touch.

Well you could bribe him. Like if you make this many friends you will get a new video game every month. Their are many people who play video games and have friends. Maybe he just likes being alone. Anyways the game to get him Deus Ex 3. Also get him Deus ex, Deus ex 2. These are excellent games. Gears of wars. Bioshock and bioshock 2. Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3.

The gift card is a good idea. In fact it is better than cash, because he will have to think on how to spend it and get the most out of it. Thanks for the hint.

Gift card are fine. I give them to my nieces and nephews. My kids like them to, even my youngest(shes 4) it lets them get whatever they want. I send them in cards saying that I want them to get something special that they really want. They all love it.
Merry Christmas!

its alright i guess but u really didnt make much of an effort. u could have called him directly and asked him what he wanted. like asked for a little list and then call ur sister and run the list by her and see what she approves of. it is kind of impersonal but i guess if ur sister is going to be mean about it, its better than nothing
