I've heard rumors that it will be Jan. 1. Is that when they're shipping out and you can't get them until Jan. 2. Or can you walk in the store and get one.

Japan already has them. If you live in the States, sometime in early 2008. Nintendo didn't announce on exactly when. :)

Toysrus get shipments every sunday morning. they get sold out very fast. Also try and use wiitracker.com i went to toysrus and they had sold around 30 wiis in 10 MINS. I WORK THERE.
