I have 3 toilets in my house, and all of them have minor problems.

Toilet #1: It wasn't flushing properly, so I took off the lid and tried flushing it again to see what was going on. When I flushed it, a giant fountain of water started spraying up from the valve-part. What could've possibly caused that?

Toilet #2: The handle is a little loose, and the bowl takes FOREVER to fill back up once flushed...usually around 3 minutes. How do I correct that?

Toilet #3: When I press the handle down to flush it, it only continues to flush for as long as I'm holding down the handle. As soon as I let go, it sounds like something (probably the flapper) slams shut. I've gotten used to just holding the handle down for 4 or 5 seconds until it flushes all the way, but I'd like to just press the handle, let go, and trust that it will still flush.

My gut tells me all 3 of these problems are minor ones, and I don't have the budget to hire a plumber if I don't need to. Any help? Can I do it myself?

#1- tighten screws on top of fill valve, if that doesn't work replace fill valve.

#2- tighten the handle .Adjust the ball c@ck

#3- Adjust the chain , shorten it.

Question 1: get a new fill valve.
2: tighten the nut behind the handle, inside the fill tank. Also, make sure water feed valve is all the way open. If that doesn't work, you may need a new fill valve on this one also. Double check the flapper, make sure it seals right.
3: new flapper, and double check the length of the chain. When you flush, the rubber flapper should stay up and floating until all the water left the tank, then in should fall down.

I agree with answer one,,,and your notion that a plumber isn't needed.

For # 2 I wonder...Is the small hose that clips on to the 1 inch tube in the tank, securely in place, and flowing well, even fast? INTO that up pipe? The float/Ballcock might be sticking some, but that wouldn't effect pressure or flow of water into the tank. Also have you checked the inlet valve on the floor/wall, to see if it's open all the way... OR removed one end of the hose to see if the valve is functioning properly?

If you happen to have a Flapper, then # 3 is as Number one states, most likely no more than a chain length adjustment.

I agree with the above. The only additional advice on toilet #2 is: The water supply valve may not be open all the way (or enough). Or maybe you have trash/debris/build-up in the supply valve or inlet to the tank.

Give your toilets some TLC. Replace all their guts. It's easy.

You can do a toilet in about 15-30 minutes. Instructions are on the kits they sell in most hardware stores.
Don't need no fancy tools and it's not hard at all, really.

Try it, you'll like it. You'll fee so proud and your family will think highly of your house care skils.

Then you can do it again in 3 years or so.
Others answers are right on too.
