Many native americans have common last names, but they had their own language. I was wondering how they ended up with those last names if they didnt speak english.

Here in Nevada many tribal people borrowed the last names of their employers. For example, in my family we didn't have a last name. When my great grandfather wanted to marry he had to take a last name. He was a ranch hand and asked the rancher if he could use his last name. The rancher gave his permission and my family has carried the last name ever since. I have a friend from another part of the state who has a similar story...her family took the last name of the farmer who they worked for.

More specifically, why are so many named "Campbell"??? That's what I was searching for when I hit this question. It's got to be more than my imagination. Among natives with European surnames, it has to be far and away #1.

There must be a reason.

I remember they said they all changed to English Names to hide their real Indian names from the white man. Some superstition, I am talking about Native americans that have last name like Americanhorse or Blackowl, these are usually pureblood Indians that have never intermarried with another race

Some indian women married white men and took their names. (Like my great-great-great grandma, Synthia Jane Campbell.) Some indians were slaves and took their master's name just like the black slaves did "way back when."
