How about a mandolin to slice veggies? I have one and I wouldn't be without it to slice potatoes and other firm vegetables.

We went through this with my hubbies mom, it never failed we would plan and think of something really great for the kids and then she would end up getting it for them. My husband finally told her that we really appreciated her getting the kids things and they loved it all but sometimes we wanted to be the one to get them the over the edge gift instead of it always being from her and that although we didnt think she needed permission to get them anything would she please ask what we had in mind BEFORE she went shopping. It has worked out great, she wasn't offended and now when it is time for holidays and birthdays she always gives us a call and asks if we are planning on buying so and so if not she is. For now the damage is done she already did the ipod so return it to the store and give each of the girls the money to buy the cases and all the extras to go with it.

Your mother-in-law might have all the kitchen gadgets she wants and then some. Why not look around her place and see what could be missing ? Better still why don't just you two get together and have lunch somewhere and find out what her likes and dislikes are. Ask her the question about kitchen gadgets: like how many is enough.

I bought my mom new measuring spoons/cups, spatulas, mixing spoons, nice dishes, and these great-looking wine glasses. Try the Williams Sonoma catalog, too; every year I pick something out for my grandma in there, like a nice set of dish towels or new cutting boards. Kitchen shopping is fun!

The Oven Mit.. it's the rubber mit you wear to get things out of the oven. It is cool because you can rinse it off in the sink if you get food on it. Target sells them for $10.
A nice wood cutting board
A pasta set
A nice hardback cookbook with lots of pictures. I love the Williams & Sonoma ones.
Best Wishes!

There are garlic mincers, egg slicers, and this plastic thingy that you roll garlic in and it takes off the paper. A microplaner is the coolest, it is a fine grater that is fabulous for grating cheese. Also, since she is "older" consider replacing some of her everyday gadgets like the potato peeler with good grips. Although I am not "older" someone did that for me a few years back and the wider, cushy handles really do make everyday chores a lot easier. Also, the new antimacrobial cutting boards are very useful and now come in an assortment of colors that you could coordinate with her kitchen. The rubber glove oven mits are the best because you can grab stuff out of the oven or reach into a pot of boiling water or turn a vegetable on the grill without burning yourself. Finally, I received an immersion blender (boat motor Emmeril Lagasse calls them) and it is the best for making gravey and puree.
