You know I don't really know where it originates from. I remeber that for the longest time as a child I was convienced that when I went to go into my bed there were snakes under it. So I would run and jump into my bed all the time for fear my feet would get bit... Perhaps every childs boogy man is different. I think mine was snakes because my bed didn;t sit very high off the floor so they only thing that could fit under it would be snakes. I don't believe that it has anything to do with tv. Its just a part of growing up.
Maybe its an instinctive sort of thing... To keep us on our toes in case a predator is lurking in the darkness... An ancient behavioural adaptation to insure survival...

When my daughter was little, she would sometimes be afraid of monsters under the bed, or in the closet, or in some nook or cranny of the room that she could not see into.
Of course, this would follow the "good night " ritual of reading stories, praying, and talking with her...all very "cozy" activities, and then leaving her (abandoning her, in her view?)
Suddenly she is now alone in the dark. And without mom or dad's protection or comforting presence. Of course it is scary, and the most natural way to articulate that fear in a tangible way is to conclude that someone or something is in a part of the room that she cannot see.
I always interpreted her fear of monsters as a positive sign that she found her parents' presence reassuring and calming.
I suspect that kids that have to grow up with alcoholic parents physically and emotionally abusing each other see enough monsters in the daytime. They don't need to worry about them at night.

I think that it's more ancient than television! I have two sisters, one who is eleven months younger than I and one who is six and a half years younger. The sister closer in age to me shared a bedroom with me when we were children, and we told our much younger sister that there was a monster under our bed so that she would be afraid to come into our room and disturb our possessions. I can not recall our having been influenced by television to conceive of that idea; we were read many fairy tales as children, and those are fraught with monsters, most likely the sources of our own invention!

Some fears are just ingrained. Humans fear what they do not know, and as a child our minds are unable to grasp the fact that what is there in the light does not change in the dark. Likewise a child can not grasp that just because they can't see something, that doesn't mean that it's not there. It's not uncommon for a baby to cry the first time they play peekaboo for this reason, to the baby mom is gone, not just hidden behind the hands. This fear was around long before TV was invented.

It would appear to stem from a fear of the dark. In the dark there are monsters to be contended with and they hide under the bed and grab your feet if you get out of bed. Some moms have used this to keep their children in bed - that, too, is a base for superstitious behaviour.

Its dark under the bed plus you can't see it so if there was something in the room but you couldn't see it it would most likely be under the bed.
