I am 20 years old and I know that an amniocentesis is not typically performed on a woman my age w/out any history of abnormal genetic history in her family but I was wondering if the doctors would perform one anyways and if this is covered by insurance in my case...im just extremely concerned that something could be wrong with my child....I know it sounds stupid but I have horrible bad luck and I am just so worried about this..also what about Chorionic villus sampling as an alternative...?

Many of the people answering are misinformed. There's about a one in 500 chance (.2%, not 2%) chance of miscarriage due to amnio. Compare that with about a 25% chance of miscarriage in general and for me it was a no-brainer. I'm also over 35 and have had three losses, and because of that my doctor would NOT perform CVS on me. Seems a CVS is more dangerous than an amnio, with about a 1% loss rate (five times as high as amnio).

Personally I think you should be allowed to do whatever it takes to set your mind at ease during your pregnancy. This is treating your whole person, not just your body, so I hope your doctor will be sympathetic to your situation and get you the happy results you seek. You can get it at 16 or so weeks, so I don't know how far along you are but I hope this is enough time for you to negotiate this.

Oh -- the amnio itself was a piece of cake... just don't look when they're doing it! I took off from work but ended up going home from work the next day because of some minor cramps (common but still cause for concern) and put up my feet. I got the results about a week and a half later and have been much, much more relaxed.

I also would not do the amnio. It does have a 2% chance of causing miscarriage. The chances of having a genetic defect at your age with no family history is way lower. I have a friend that lost a perfectly healthy baby boy at 21wks after having an amnio done because of a false positive AFP.

You can have an AFP test done around 16wks that will test your blood for markers. It does have a high false positive rate. If you get a positive AFP your doctor should first do a high level ultrasound and if the ultrasound confirms the AFP results then an amnio is done. Some doctors go straight for the amnio and this is an unnecessary risk that should almost never be done.

There is a small risk of miscarriage with an amnio so I wouldn't get one if I were you. I dont think it would be worth the risk and I know someone who lost her baby at 18 weeks when she had an amnio, to follow up on a positive AFP tests. The baby ended up being fine, so everything was really for nothing, which is why I wont even do the AFP test.

hey you should not get an amniocentesis if u are not asked to by the midwife as it is dangerous and can cause you to miscarry.
you will get spina bifda and down sindrome tests done through your blood and at you 20 week detailed scan they wil be able to pick up any abnormalities.
i think you should try and relax and if your midwife thought there was anything wrong she would check into it.
if you are still realy worried about things tel her how you feel she will be able to reasure you everythings fine.
good luck and i hope it all works out.

If you have genetic problems that run in your family you may want to have it done...but really if they find out there is something wrong with your baby what are you going to do about it at this point? why risk the test (which can cause early labor, or miscarraige...rare but it happens) ? You would have to talk to your insurance company about if they cover it...but personally I would not have the test done.

I had pre-eclampsia while pregnant and went into labor at 33 weeks and they stopped it but 2 days later they done an Amnio on me to see if his lungs were matured or not cause if they were they were going to go ahead with my c-section. His lungs were not developed though even though they had given me shots to speed that up, anyhow i had him at 35 weeks. I was 21 at the time.
Everything went fine with my amnio.

I doubt they would do one unless something came back strange with your blood work, your CV test or your ultrasound. They are not going to just give you one without a really good reason.
