My girlfriend is an amateur artist. She likes to draw stuff, take photos, mess around in Photoshop and stuff like that.

She has an awesome computer, image editing software, and a good camera. I wanted to get her one of those drawing boards for computers, that lets you draw on a digital pad.

I was wondering, are these pretty cool for people who are amateurs at drawing and computers? Or do you need a college education at design to get how they work? Had a buddy who would draw insane looking cartoons with them back in the old days, but he was pretty much a pro at it, with the college degree and everything.

Anyway, any input, opinion etc about these drawing boards would be appreciated! Also, what price class I should expect. I'm more than willing to pay up to $500. :)

That is nice but trust me. A bunch of red roses, an evening at a good restaurant, A day in a spa will be much more appreciated.

Getting something like that is nice but you (as the giver) need to be ABSOLUTELY sure that it is the one she wants or even IF she wants one. It is very disappointing to get a toy like that and have to wait till the next day.. or God forbid even longer to exchange it and get the right one.

A nice hand painted voucher (hand made by you) to get one together would be a better plan.

I would say a Wacom tablet is a good idea. I know many many artists that swear by them. I've never had any luck with mine, but I'm terrible at drawing...
You can get a good one for under or around $500.

Some other ideas:
Does she have a good printer? A large format photo printer can be particularly helpful to a digital artist.

Another suggestion would be to take her on a shopping spree (you should probably set a budget though) at her favorite art store... that way she can choose what she really needs/prefers. Artists can be very particular about the materials they use.

Lots of people really love drawing tablets and many digital artists refuse to work without them. They are really easy to setup and work with, many just require plugging into USB. My suggestion would be that a medium-sized tablet would be ideal, as many of the small ones don't allow you to really draw as normal. Also, get one that comes with both the pen stylus and a mouse....

Wacom is the leading manufacturer of this technology.

Good luck.

This is the best tablet I could find for around 500 it's 489 and I would die of happiness if someone gave it to me. This is from the wacom site, the best company for all your tablet needs. If your looking for a tablet this is the place to find it.

Probably about that much, but I would also suggest a book of two on types of drawing she hasn't tried yet.

i once had an artist girlfriend, and gave her old bones, feathers and road kill and she is now my wife (for true, i tried the flowers and candy thing, she chewed my @$$ over the candy and smiled over the flowers, but got all excited over the bones and feathers and flat mice and frogs...)
