it is a wood burning stove and I have fire wood on the porch I have a lighter and newpaper do I open the flu or close it when I first start any pointers will be appreciated.

Open flue. Lay down crumpled paper, put kindling on top (small sticks or strips of wood). Light it. Add more wood, thicker each time, as it starts to feed. When you have a good bed of coals from medium to large pieces, you can throw on BIG pieces, maybe partially close the damper and just let it "cook".

Open the flue...otherwise your house will fill up with smoke.
