Work is force applied F along the displacement D. In this case force applied equal to the refrigerator's weight w=mg and displacement to height raised h.

Work = force multiplied by distance. In these abstract problems we pretend that the work is done only against the force of gravity and we ignore forces involved in gouging the walls and tearing up the carpet on the stairs.

W = ( 150 kg ) ( 9.8 m / s² ) ( 8 m )
