am 18 weeks pregnant and been suffering bad migraines therefor have had quite a lot of time off work due to this, when i phoned my employer to tell them when id be back to work and see if i could start a little later as i was struggling to drive in dark (have to leave 7 in morning) was told that my morning calls had been taken away(i am a care assistant and work mon - fri am 7-12 and tues/thurs teas 2-5 therefor i would be left with 6 hrs work per week..just not enough. they hadnt phoned me to inform me, i called them and they gave me no notice whatsoever about this change which i wouldnt of agreed to anyway as i cant afford to lose these hours but taking a half hour call off me every day wouldnt effect me as much and would help me a great deal as i could leave later when its not dark..where do i stand with this..can they really just remove my hours with out notifying me??
many thanks in advance

They can,
however might get more complicated if it changes your employment status such as fulltime to part-time as this could affect things like benefits. But sounds like you were part-time at 28hours to begin with and the job may be defined by the hours, when a client needed care. While its not courteous of them, probably not illegal.

Good luck with the migraines though, my came during pregnancy. And know they are hellish, but eventually they did stop. In the meantime caffeine helped them.

Honestly, this doesn't sound at all like they are discriminating against you because you're pregnant.

If you are a care assistant and aren't able to do your job, your employer needs to find somebody who can. I get migraines too, so I understand how hard it is to want to do ANYTHING when you get one. But if you've been calling in sick a lot, your employer can give your shifts to somebody who can be there every day. It was bad on their part to not call you or even talk to you about an alternative situation, but it might not be too late. Go to your employer and talk to your supervisor. See if you can come up with something. But if they aren't willing to work with you at all, you still have plenty of time to find an employer that will.

Good luck!

unfortunatly ya they can take and give hours as they please they can do just about anything that they want to do......if this is a big problem i would talk to them and see why they have decided to take all your days and see what you can do to get some if not all of them back so that you can still make a living untill you have to leave work while you have the baby so anyways i would do some asking and talking to see where you stand and if all else falls i would try and see if i could get another job so that you have hours and keep makeing a living good luck with all this i no it sucks

An employer can change your work schedule at will. If they are doing this to frustrate you because your preg and hope you'll quit, then you might take issue with the EEOC.

you can go to the dept of labor and tell them that you have had your hours of work reduced without good reason and they should be able to do something.
