Like everyone else I think you should put up a sign. How about one that says 'I answer the door by appointment only', or 'If the light is out, nobody's home', then remove the bulb. You could put up a fence with a locked gate. Or instead of a doorbell, hook up a PA to the button with a voice that says, 'sorry, I can't see you now, I only only see one person a day, and your not it. Tomorrow doesn't look good either'.

I had the same problem and considered buying a gun. I have 2 dogs but that doesn't help. I now have a sticker from the local council that says "we don't accept cold callers". It has worked and even the religious people walk straight past. You could make a sign that said whatever you wanted.

Easy.....Shut the door on them! Its your house so you can do what you want. If they step foot in your house without your permission, they become trespassers and then you can take all reasonable steps to remove them, ie push them out and shut the door. They can do nothing about it. Maybe not the best idea when trick or treaters come round, they are only kids! stand up for yourself........that is unless you are a frail old lady, then i would just not answer the door

Put a sign on your door or near your door saying you don't accept unsolicited callers. If they persist, you can make a formal complaint against that particular company or organisation.

You can get a sticker from most B&Q stores, and Homebase, that says "No hawkers, salesmen or flyers".
Other than that, I have a poster I bought from Woburn wildlife park that helps - it simply shows a Cheetah and says "If you have not been invited, you had better have a damn good reason for knocking!".

If I'm in a devilish mood, I'll open the door and say something like. "Is our appointment now?"
They'll say something like, "Oh, no you weren't expecting me."
Then I'll say,"Thats what I thought." and I'll shut the door.

Most of the time I'll just tell them, " No thank you, but thanks for stopping by."

If they press for an appointment, I'll try to set it up about 3 or 4 years in the future.

Post a no trespassing sign. Then you can have them locked up if they come knocking.
