Nail polish remover is very good, but if you use a hair dryer on the label you can peel it off without leaving any glue.

Dab a Q-tip in baby oil or Vegetable oil and rub the residue, oce the glue is gone, wipe off the oil. Obviously, this only works on a non-porus surface.

If it's not something too precious, try some nail varnish remover. It works on sticky label marks on CD covers etc, but try it on a cloth or something rather than cotton wool or you will end up with an icky, wooly, sticky mess!

If it's the kind where a paper label has split into two layers, soaking in water usually loosens it. If it's just the sticky stuff, try furniture polish and rub with tissue - surprisingly, it works!

If it's on glass or hard plastic, window/glass cleaner is very good for removing adhesive.
