It's because of where we are in the world and the air and water currents that drive the weather.

Well, we didn't choose where to be put in the world. I am English, and I love the English weather. Right now (9pm) it is really cold but I love it. I go out walking every day, and every day brings its own delights. My biggest concern is the real dearth of birds. I set my alarm really early sometimes so that I can go out in the bitterly cold mornings to hear the dawn chorus, but sometimes there isn't one. I find dead birds, either frozen or starved to death. I have numerous boxes in my garden with bird food in, but it doesn't seem to help.
Another rather diverse note: I was waiting for a bus the other day outside my local greengrocer's shop, and I noticed that he was selling DAFFODILS. Call me old fashioned, but daffodils do not belong in December!
The weather is all over the place. Summer is cool, autumn is warm ... It never used to be like this. Who are we to believe? I read newspaper articles which say YES there is global warming, and other articles which say NO, there is no such thing as global warming. I read the New Scientist and other journals, but there appears to be no agreement. So what is the man in the street supposed to think?

England has a maritime climate, the fact that this is an island means that the temperature of the sea (which is relatively warm) affects the air temperature, keeping it reasonably mild. So no snow, lots of rain.

It's because of our geographical location. The UK is located where the polar cell meets the Ferrel cell. This causes an area of low pressure and hence rainfall.

The jetstream is also located at this point (the polar front) as well. The jetstream moves in a wavy pattern, so when the UK is on one side of the wave, we get fine weather but cold, because we are in an area of high pressure, but it's the polar cell. When the UK is on the other side of the wave, we get mild weather, but wet and windy because of the low pressure cell.

It's always been the same, although we did have heatwaves in '76 and '77, and real snow!
Now, though, thank god for planes!
