I have a NVIDIA 8600GT video card and am wondering if adding another 8600GT card(making dual cards) will help my performance for gaming or am i better off spending more and getting the 8800GT card?

I don't know why these people think the 8600 in SLI is better than a 8800. They don't know what they are talking about.

Even with 2 8600 cards in SLI, one 8800 is better and cheaper than 2 8600s.

Later on when you want to upgrade, (and the prices have dropped) you can get another 8800 for SLI, which is even better, if you want.

It also consumes less power, allowing more power for the rest of your computer, saving you some money from buying a new power supply for SLI, and saving you some money oh your electric bill.

I suggest getting one 8800 GT. For a fraction of the cost of the GTX, it is only slightly worse. and it consumes less power.

What Processor and RAM are you running. That's important to know if you're deciding whether to spend the money for the 8800GT.
There are benchmark comparisons for the dual 8600GT SLi and 8800GT on the web you can search for. But if you have a good processor such as the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or higher and good RAM, then the single 8800GT will greatly outperform the 8600GT SLi

If it is an 8800 GTX then it will well be worth the money to replace your existing card, and skip the SLI. If you are thinking 8800 GTS then it is about a toss up. However, if you are running Vista, SLI is not compatible yet. So, you are limited to only one card (no brainer get the 8800 GTS/X).

In rebuttal to the post that said you can't SLI the two different cards together, that is incorrect. You can. However, the memory speed will be idled down to match the slower card. You will still get the benefit of the processing power and added memory, but probably isn't worth the extra money over the matched card.

Single 8800GT is better. It has 112 stream processors and uses 256bit memory interface.

8600GT with only 32 stream processors and 128bit memory interface can never catch up even if in SLI mode.

DUAL 8600 is better than one single 8800. You can't DUAL the 8600 and 8800 together
