...Can anyone explain how that type of calculation/measurement works?

Do you mean the red shift of the Lyman Alpha line of hydrogen? This is used to measure the rate of expansion of the Universe, from which its age can be estimated, on current theories, by running the film backwards to the Big Bang.

I thought the answer was 12 to 14 billion years old.

Principle: Doppler shift proportional to relative motion. Also, for distant galaxies, proportional to distance from us (Hubble effect).
