The military is suppose to adapt to changing circumstances, so I think it's great. But I recall that the military has been engaging in a lot of public diplomacy all along*, maybe it's just now being reported.

* And has after every war we have been involved with since WWII.

It is like ol' Teddy Roosevelt said about diplomacy. Talk softly but carry a big stick. We have the power and might of our military, the strongest in the history of the world, that is the big stick. People don't like that big stick shoved into their face but don't mind being aware it is behind our back or at our side. Talking softly gets much more accomplished. I have been told from when very small that you can catch many more flies with honey than with vinegar. TR knew that we should always use the honey tactics first and only deploy the vinegar (big stick) as a last resort. I only wish that cowboy would have taken Teddy's advice.

I wouldn't call this liberal, I'd call it smart. For the folks that don't pay attention: when the Mahdi army called a cease fire, their has been marked increase in the number of businesses owned by members of that group / militia. One military commander stated they are becoming more incorporated to get the people's support rather than blow them up (good stuff). It makes sense to combat their support with similar support from us. I for one would be happy to transition into a soft-power war, it would definitely be a marked improvement over a bloody long and drawn out insurgency.

Tactics change constantly in every war. Besides, "traditional values of hope and optimism" are at the core of Conservative beliefs.

You win a war by destroying the enemies' will and ability to fight. Not by holding hands around the campfire, roasting marshmallows and singing kumbaya.

Let me win your hearts and minds...or I'll burn your damn huts down.

I think that the military is focused on one thing and one thing only - WINNING.

I don't think that we should be concerned that they're focused on that one thing as it's the correct thing on which to be focused.

That's what I think - thanks for asking!

I guess you mean Bechtel and Haliburton are liberal companies.

Maybe you're right.
