It was at night. It looked about 2 inches long. It could jump/fly only like a foot off the ground.

I live in South Africa. It wasn't a grasshopper. It sort of had a head like a soldier ant.

That looks like a mole cricket to me.

Its called a molecricket they are very common to the united states and live mostly in the warm south. Do see the front two paws. They look just like a mole. They burrow in the ground just like moles, but have the jumping and short distant flying ability of a cricket. Weird creature.

Where do you live?

It has some features of a cricket or grasshopper and other features of a cicada. Was it screaming by any chance? If it was than it was a type of cicada or locust.

My first though was a dobsonfly, but I'm not sure now.

its an Ash Beetle. I seen one and caught it and brought it to a science lab
