BEST ANSWER is gator_ce. As suggested, I dropped a (just the right size) bare ball of aluminum foil down the plastic flashlight. Added 2 C-batteries. Replaced the cap. The flashlight works fine. Now I can use up some of my overstocked C-batteries and not buy D-batteries. Alterations completed within 10 minutes. Thanks.

You could place one battery a wad of aluminum foil wrapped in plastic wrap around the outside so that it does not touch the inside of the flashlights body (required if the body is metal) and then place the last battery in. The foil will make up the space difference for the smaller batteries. You should also expect a shorter life span out of the batteries.
Good Luck

My experience is that LED flashlights work fine with NiMH batteries, not much penalty with light output. Consider also simply bringing extra batteries rathern than a solar charger. We went on a 7-week bicycle tour, and did not need to recharge the batteries in the LED flashlight even once. A digital camera did drain the batteries quickly.

Alkaline batteries of those sizes are both 1.5 volts DC.

The MAH capacity is the difference in them.

This is visible by the difference in physical size.

You can buy 'empty shells' which are the size of a D cell on the outside, and a C cell fits inside it.
