So Exams 1 and 2 are worth 30% of grade each (60% total) and final worth 40%. So far I've gotten 87.5% and 79.3%. Is it possible to get an A- (90%) in the class if I get an A on the final?

Exam 1 = 87.5%
Exam 2 = 79.3%
Exam 3 = _____

Add them all together, divide by 3, that gives you the average.

But even if you make 100% you'll only make an 88.9% average, which isn't quite an A-, ask your teacher if there's any extra credit you can do. But then.. that's average, so I'm not completely sure.

Hmm...
Exam 1 = 87.5 x .30 = 26.25
Exam 2 = 79.3 x .30 = 23.79
Exam 3 = 100 x .40 = 40

Total = 90.04 %

( I don't know if it's right or not, but according to that, if you make 100% then you can, so it looks good, right??)

Okay add the 3 grades total so 87.5 +79.3 + lets say 100

add them up then divide by the amount of test.. so 266 divided by 3 = 88.9 B +

heres the eqn.

(87.5)(0.3) + (79.3)(0.3) + X(0.4) = Y
in this case y is equal to the final grade you want to make. so if you want a 90%, put 90 into y and solve for x. You will need a 100% on your final.

yes

right now out of 100% possible, you have
87.5 * .30 = 26.25
79.3 * .30 = 23.79
total equals 60.04

so you need 40 more points which means 100% on the 40% final

Yes... if you got a 100% on your test... your final grade would be 90.04

I guess I should give you the math ...

87.5 x 30%= 26.25
79.3 x 30% = 23.79
100 x 40% = 40 (If you could get 100)
Total grade = 90.04

EDIT- OMG I'm so sorry... really bad math ... Im so embarrassed ... yes you could make it... corrections above !

Yes it is possible to get an -A.

.875 x .3 + .793 x .3 + X x .4 = 90

.263 + .238 + X x .4 = .90

X x .4 = .90 - .501

X = .399 / .4

x = .9975

In other words, you need to ace your last test to get an -A for the class.

Let's calculate:
.3 (87.5) + .3 (79.3) + .4 x = 90
24.25 + 23.79 + .4x = 90
.4x = 90 - 48.04
.4x = 40.96
x = 102.4
This shows you would have to get a 102.4 % on the final to get a 90 average.
Better start looking for extra credit projects.

you can get an A if you make a 100 on the test... that will give you a 90.4 for a final grade

87.4 *.3 = 26.25
79.3*.3 = 23.79
add those together for a 50.4
You can get 40 more points from the exam giving you a 90.4

Good luck

You would have to get a 100 to get an exact 90. In fact a 99 you are still a B.
