Lucy(Lucia) of Siracusa in Sicily,Italy, was a teen girl who was murdered("executed") or martyred for refusing to renounce Christ by the magistrates of Roman Emperor Diocletianus in about the year AD 300
Lucy or Lucia

Lucy means "Light Girl"
and there is a celebration of lighting candles in Scandinavia, esp. Sweden, with dances and hymn singing

Do you have other customs( there are Sicilian customs also) observed in your family, church or community?

Do you make special pasteries for St Lucia Day?

Some make Spaghetti Neri(tomato sauce with squid ink)!
There is a St Lucy Pizza with green herbs or vegetables put in circle around the edge and 4"candles" of extra cheese(usually a cheese not already on the pizza, like mozzarella) extended out into the middle with tomato slices as the flames for the candles.
