I have two 1/2 dollars one is 1980 D and the other is 1974 with no mint mark. I looked on the listing of 1/2 dollar mints and it had P- and D- mints listed for that year. Is there a special reason mine doesnt have that mark?

It was not until 1980 that all U.S. coinage except the cent finally got a P mint mark for the Philadelphia mint that is still in use today. A P did show up on the war time nickels of WW II but ended when the they were no longer minted. before 1980 coins minted at Philly had no mint mark. So you have just a normal 1/2 for the date. Most coin books list coins from Philly just as a date to 1980, then afterwords list the date with a P. A listing that list a date before 1980 with a P means the person does not know much and should get into a different line of business. Don't stop looking at 1/2 dollars though for there are still some 40% silver ones out there. 1965-1970, a 1974-D doubled die Obverse.

Some of the older dollars may not have mint marks. The US Dollar has declined every year since 1967. It is prob not worth much more than face value from a collector strand point.

I believe Kennedy half-dollars from Philadelphia during this time had no mint marks. It's fine. It's not special.

First of all. Get counterfeit out of your mind. People may have scratched it off or some batches of coins made by the mint just don't have marks on them.

If your coin if a proof then it will sometimes not have the mint mark. Other coins don't have mint marks because they were struck in Philadelphia.
