okso heres the deal. When I start my car/truck (whatever you wanna call it) there is a knocking noise coming from under my hood. And dont go away until I start to drive. Then when i start to drive it fades away a bit to a kind of clicking that can barely be heard but goes with the speed i am driving. Then when i turn a sharp corner there is a rattling what could these be. It drives fine has no problem starting up just all these noises are comming. I took it into the repair shop today and they said they think its a bad or broken flywheel but dont know cause they are not a trans. shop and refeared me to one. I called them and he says by what i am describing that is not what it is. ANYONE!!!!! Please help. What would a broken or bad flywheel sound like if that was the case??? What could it be????

By the way it is a 96 Chevy Blazer. And it has been making this noise umm for almost a month now. Yeah I know i should have gotten it checked sooner but my husband is in the military and he has tried to get out of work to take it himself but the shop he was in wouldnt let you go unless it was for a medical reason

flywheels are not that easy to break them..
maybe this could be broken fan hiting your radator or something..or maybe a piece of your pressure plate has gone off

Unless you have a standard transmission, you do NOT have a flywheel. If you have an automatic transmission your starter engages a flexplate with a tack welded toothed ring gear around the perimeter. A flywheel costs between $150 -$200.00. An automatic transmission flex plate costs $25.00. Any trained mechanic could easily diagnose a damaged flexplate or flywheel.

A knocking sound could simply be a loose torque converter which bolts to the flexplate, 10 minutes would fix this problem. If you truly had a broken flywheel or flexplate you could not start your car or truck. Also your poor body (yourself) would feel as if 220 volts was running through your bones. The vehicle would vibrate so bad your eyes couold no longer see.

Forget the first place you took your vehicle and try another independant mechanic who specializes in your brand of car.

First to properly give a answer to a question. YOu have to put the make and model of car.. manual or automatic trans.. YOu said that the car has no problem starting up.. If you had a broken flywheel it would be the teeth on the wheel itself.. It would make a terrible noise when the starter would contact it.. Flywheels are made of iron, so it would be really hard to bend. You can warp it from overheating it..(clutch olnly). If the noise is under the hood. I would suspect a valve train noise.. I would also check for a bad CV joint. (that will only make noise when you turn sharply) Flywheels don't take that much abuse if it is in a automatic tranny.. I would get back under the hood or take it to a different mechanic...
Good Luck

a flywheel is not transmission related its only designed to hold the clutch, allow the starter to turn the crankshaft and some special ones (dual mass flywheels) stop engine wear due to sudden, sharp movements of the spiget shaft in the gearbox

because the flywheel has no other purpose and turns at the same rate as the engines crankshaft it cannot be at fault as the noise wouldent go away at all

assuming that the car is manual, it could be a gearbox, clutch, clutch release bearing, driveshaft or (if the car is rear/four/all wheel drive) a propshaft mount - so the fact that it happens when the car isnt moving taes the driveshaft out of the picture as these only move when the car moves so onto the final 3

if you start the car and put the cars clutch pedal and the noise changes (gets better/worse) chances are its proberly a clutch - but if it stays the same its something inside your gearbox thats rattleing and requires repair/replacement of the box itself

hope that helps

if it was a broken flywheel the starter will enegage and then stop when it comes to the broken area of the fly wheel. and taking it to a repair shop and them not saying they can not fix it cause they are are not a tranny shop is wrong cause they can trouble shoot it to make sure it is the fly wheel. and to change the fly wheel is not hard so take it to some one else and have them fix it. also take it to a trany shop they can also trouble shoot it .but i do not think it is the flywheel.

yes it could very well be a cracked flywheel, and probably is, but the other sound you are hearing sounds to me like a bad cv joint. if you turn sharply to the right and you hear the clicking sound it is your right cv joint, if you turn sharply to the left and you hear the clicking it is your left cv joint, that is if your vehicle is front wheel drive. the only way to find out if it is your flywheel cracked is to have someone remove the flywheel inspection cover and inspect it for cracks. good luck hope this helped you

Well we had a similar problem on our van and couldn't figure it out until one day the van stopped moving while everything was still turning! We opened the hood to see that a belt had come off from all the wheels it was turning and the mechanic said that one of the wheel had come out of alignment and was rattling everything till finally one came loose and bang! It came off...We had everything put back in place and perfectly tight and no more noises or problem since that day.Hope this help. Good luck!

THAT'S WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME, JUST TAKE IT TO THE TRANSMISSION SHOP AND MOST OF THEM HAVE A INSPECTION PLATE THAT CAN BE REMOVED AND THEN THEY CAN LOOK AT THE FLYWHEEL.
