The raven is a symbol of death. It's black and mysterious. It says, "nevermore," illustrating that all of Poe's joy is in the past and will never come again.

In folklore, the raven symbolizes death. Death is final and nothing can be the same after wards for those who are left. Nevermore, therefore, is the finality of death as well as the changes that come with it for those still living.
