old grade x .8 + new test score x .2= 79.5
84.6 x.8 + new test score x .2 =79.5
67.68 + nts x .2 = 79.5
nts x .2=79.5 - 67.68

You have 84.6 percent of 80% of the points, or
0.846 x 0.80 = 0.6788
You want 0.795, so you need: 0.795 - 0.6788 = 0.11820
Now, your points (100) on the exam account for 20% of the points in the quarter, so you need to get
0.11820 * 1 / 0.20 points on the exam to get that 11.820 percent of the course points, or
0.11820 * 5 = 59.1%.
Please, try to pass the exam, anyway. If you ace the exam, you end up with 87.88%!

well, think of it this way...
if the next exam is 20% of the final, than what you already have must be 80%. Therefore, the standing average of 84.5 is 80% of the final grade. If "X" is the final grade which brings the average to 79.5, then 84.5*(0.8) + X*(0.2) = 79.5. Solve for X and the answer is 59.5.

(4 * 84.6 + 1 * X) / (5) = 79.5
(338.4 + X) / 5 = 79.5
338.4 + X = 397.5
X = 59.1
A 59.1 is the lowest grade you can get to keep a 79.5
