They want to be politically correct. It is interesting though, because of this:
You are not supposed to say FIREMAN but you should say Firefighter...
You are not supposed to say MAILMAN but you should say Mail-person or Mail-carrier ...
You are not supposed to say MERRY CHRISTMAS but you should say Happy Holidays...
Why hasn't America changed the word WOMAN or WOMEN?
Oh, and if we are all into political correctness, then why does the radio stations play almost 100% CHRISTMAS music?!
Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

I first read this ignorant question and expected many intelligent answers about how this is a holiday season for everyone, not only Christians. I am SHOCKED at how close-minded so many of the answerers are! I don't like to bash people on these boards, but I just can't believe what I'm reading. Christmas is NOT the only holiday in December. There is Chanukah and Kwanzaa, and people who celebrate those holidays should not be left out. I find it VERY polite when I hear "happy holidays."

Some are other religions that do no view Jesus Christ as their savior. The Muslims have a holiday similar this time of year but without the Christmas part.
Jews have a happy Hanuka, so in an effort to make everyone feel comfortable and loved and let's drop the Merry Christmas because I feel that way about that it is done to death. Happy holidays? okay I can live with that kind of.
shoving a raindeer up someone's butt hardly seems like the Christian thing to do? That kind of brings reproach on Jesus.
You should stick with happy holidays and we won't have to explain that your a model christian ?

More people are saying Happy Holidays or Season Greetings because there are other religious holidays occurring around the same time as Christmas, such as Hannakah and Eid al-Adha.
I don't need anyone to tell me Merry Christmas as a way of reaffirming and strengthing my Christian beliefs. They are solid on their own. If someone wants to wish me a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, I'll gladly accept the warm words, but at the same time I feel someone who is an atheist, Buddhist, etc. shouldn't feel compelled to say Merry Christmas if they don't want to.

When someone tells you "happy holidays," just say "Merry Christmas" back!
But realize that in most stores, people are told to say the generic "happy holidays" so they don't offend anyone (except for everyone who celebrates Christmas, I suppose.) So don't get too mad at them, because it might not be what they really wanted to say anyway.

They want to be politically correct. Even though something like 96% of the American population celebrates Christmas, they still think it's necessary to please the 4% of people who don't celebrate Christmas, *and* who are offended at the very mention of Christmas.
Companies who say "happy holidays" offend me. What, they hate me and my ilk so much they can't even bring themselves to say the name of our extremely widely celebrated holiday? So why should I do my Christmas shopping there?
Somebody above mentioned Kwanzaa. You realize the number of people who celebrate Kwanzaa is in the double digits now?! It's getting crazy-popular! But seriously, Kwanzaa was invented by some guy in Cali like forty years ago. It is not the ancient African celebration that everyone seems to think it is. Plus it seems like a pretty racist holiday.
Actually, even tho I celebrate Christmas, I would cheerfully reply "happy Chanukah" to anyone who said the same to me. In fact, the other day Fox News had this Chanukah commercial, and my whole family cheered because we're getting so sick of "happy holidays".
So, Happy Chanukah!

Grammar kiddo, grammar!
And, if you were athiest or hindu or any other non-christian religion, you would not celebrate Christmas. However, we are in the time of season near new years, so "Happy Holidays."
It's unoffensive. What's offensive is that you demand everyone to recognize your religious holiday and your violent [if somewhat unbelievable] response to those that don't but want to wish you happy days ahead.
Granted most people don't really mind, it is a free country, but people generally just don't want to unwittingly offend or be wrong.
