Once? England fought us during our Revolutionary War to become independent; they fought us again during our War of 1812, because the Brits kept harrassing our ships at sea.
Perhaps a part of it was due to Americans being comprised of so many nationalities; mostly from England when the first colonies were first settled but by the early 1700s, there were so many Germans, Austrians, Swiss, Netherlanders, Belgiums, etc., that we began to think of ourselves as unique, with unique views on life, particularly in politics.
And, unlike France, Spain, the Netherlands and other European countries that founded colonies in America, England taught us to be independent, to make our own decisions and to live with our decisions.
Too bad the foreign hordes invading our country today can't do the same as our ancestors; assimilate and be responsible.

America didn't want an "oppressive" rule, so they decided to rebel. Once America started to rebel, England started to fight back. It's funny, because how many other countries did America oppress after this war...
Pick up any American textbook, they'll have 8 million chapters devoted to the American Revolution. Always remember that there are 2 sides to the story, and America tends to frame things so that Americans are the victims.

You won't learn about it because Britain was fighting France and Spain at the same time. I doubt anyone living in North America truly realises it, but the American Revolutionary "war" and the War of 1812 were NOTHING compared to Europe.
10,000 American patriot casualties in the Revolutionary war? Small potatoes compared to what was going on at the time in France.

To correct what was said above:
The English did not discover America.
We were once colonies of Britain, and then were were more of a problem. We invaded Canada, trying to get them to revolt with us. We fought the British navy and resisted some of their long-standing policies.
No one has yet mentioned the war of 1812.
We were being a problem to British shipping and we fought back against their policy of "impressment." We also were a threat to their monopoly in trade in some areas.

If you have no information then this is the absolute worst place to ask.
Half the answers are going to be dead wrong because the person is either misleading you on purpose, or their just an idiot.
Most of the rest will be highly opinionated to the point of being worthless to you.
Go grab an encyclopedia and read up--theyre considered just general knowledge, so its something it will give you enough information to be able to hold a semi-intelligent conversation on the topic.

bescause The Americas started out under England's rule. It was explorers from England that discovered America. The English colonies in the Americas decided that it was unfair for England to tax them without giving them any representation in parlament, amoung other things. So the English people in the Americas fought for their independance

They've got it right. The Revolution which the Colonies won and the War of 1812 which the British and Canadians won. (That's why the White House is painted white!)
