Since the first lady is not called "First Wife"
You can't call the first husband a husband.
Answer. "First Spouse." or "First Gentleman."
If a male president's wife is called a "First Lady," and the
president has been divorced and remarried. Which lady is the
"First" Lady?
If now, we get a female president, and they start calling the
president's husband "Spouse." As in First Spouse."
If the female president has been divorced and remarried.
Which spouse, is the "First" Spouse?
And think what would happen if our president turned gay.

This problem occurred recently in India. When Ms. Pratiba Patil took oath as President of India, this question was raised. It was asked to address him as President's husband. Only president who didn't had a first lady was Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He was a bachelor.

The term is not official, however First Gentleman is a common substitution in some countries.

How about here in Britain where we simply called Margaret Thatcher's husband 'The Prime minister's Husband' - or more often Dennis Thatcher.
