How do I know if all the files for Norton are gone? I went to add/remove programs and uninstalled Norton 360.Do Sysmantac (spelling) files need to be deleted also? I have dialup and whenever I go to download anything that is big, I usually get booted off before it's finished :( That is another issue) Please advise on both issues. Thanks a whole bunch! :)

Yes, you also have to remove all files related to, "Symantec". They are also part of the 375 plus fragments glued to your registry, files/folders and subsystem. Or else you are going to have conflict with another antiviurs program when you install.

Go to your tray start, run and type in: c://program files, click on browse, click on program files, and look at all your files and if you see Nortons, delete the file. (Should the file say it is being used, reboot and try again to delete).

Now go to start, search and type in: Nortons, and let your pc search for Nortons files. Delete from top to bottom all file related to Nortons. (If some say being used, reboot and the next time, they should delete).

Again, go to start, search and type in: Symantec, and let your pc search for all related file to Symantec, delete from top to bottom. (Any file that says, being used reboot and go back and they should delete).

In today techology, dail-up really does not support servers that are downloading at 1MB. (The server downloading the data, usually will always time out). If you can afford, you should shop around for 1MB ADSL. (I only pay Euro 24 for 1Mega). Don't know what country you are in, so shop around for an IP service that has a good deal on ADSL.

Since your Norton question has already been answered correctly by two posters, I'll address your connection problems. Several things may be going on here. One is line noise. This can be checked by a technician who will check all your outside and inside wiring and switching boxes. Reliable Internet connectivity needs a special box on the outside of your home. They will install it for free if you call the company and set up an appointment. You must have line maintenance on your phone bill to qualify for free equipment. Old lines and switches can cause line "noise" and result in connectivity problems. The second thing that could be happeneing is your browser is configured to automatically kick you offline after a period of "idle time". Even though you are downloading a file, the browser may see this as "Idle time" and break the connection. Check your browser configuration. Third, your browser may not support large files being downloaded to their server. Make sure your download destination is a folder on your machine and not their server. Some browsers allow you to download a file to their server and then transfer it to your rig in one huge packet. You don't want to do this. Configure your browser to send the file directly to your folder, bit by bit. Hope this has helped.

Edit: By the way, Kevin's advice is totally wrong. Do your own research into free software, tested by experts in the field, and then decide if you have the right protection. Most, not all, free software is as good as, if not better than, the commercially available stuff on the shelves of Best Buy.

To completely remove Norton products:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the Norton / Symantec website.

you should have ran the Norton removal tool. my advise is you buy more RAM and reinstall Norton so it doesn't lag your system that bad. symantec is the best you should have never uninstalled it. as far as being booted off. that is typical for dial up. finally beware of those who give you dozens of links to free anti virus and spyware software. all those programs do is give false positives and eventually you will end up deleting an important file. so stay clear of the free garbage.

Also, don't forget to check your registry. Lots of stuff will still be there that you should remove.
