Well, the rise of the Industrial Revolution also led to the rise of factories. In this era, these factories began to grow exponentially, and as a result, so did their exhaust of smoke. Today, this still continues, and the smoke has been linked to higher rates of cancer, depletion of the ozone layer (and here the global warming debate begins!), and pollution of the air in general.
Also, run-off of chemicals from these factories into rivers, lakes, and seas have also had a negative effect on the Earth. Thousands of animals and creatures die daily due to oil spills (remember the seals in the Exxon oil spill?), and toxic chemicals and garbage dumped in their habitats. In addition, deforestation has also removed many types of animals from their habitats- making the number of extinct or endangered species grow by the hundreds.
And this is only a short summary of some of the things humans have done!
