It has been answered here, but I will try to simplify it, if I can. Somewhere on your piping is a diverter valve that is not closing all the way, allowing the water to go both places at the same time. Replace the diverter or at least find out why it isnt closing all the way.

You probably have to repair that knob that switches the water flow from the shower head to the faucet.

If it is the type that you pull up a lever on the spout, you will probably need to replace the spout. When you pull up the lever, a diverter blocks the spout and sends the water supply up to the shower. Easy fix though.

One of your answers referred to a pull up spout. If your valve needs to be replaced, you can easily switch your spout to the pull up kind. It's a lot cheaper than replacing the valve. If you call a plumber, he may be able to repair what you have, with washers or grinding the seats.
