I'm an introvert so this probably wouldn't be the best question for me, but to my opinon, i would just sit in the back and wait for someone to talk to me or go talk to someone i know. maybe make some small talk with some random people, but sitting next to the hostess would be that last thing on my mind. I know most likely wasn't the answer you wee looking for, but that is what i truely think. i'm not much of a people person.

No, it is the hostess place to instruct people where to sit at the dinner table, by having name cards or simply by saying where everyone is to sit. I assume the sit next to the hostess is always reserve for her VIP which is her husband. Now the sit on the other side is fair game, if no one is sitting there.
