seriously. i understand that as a whole people in this country don't get adequate nutrients throughout the day; but i eat very well, i always have. i eat mainly organic and there are always several servings of vegetables, fruits, grains, and protein during the day for me... i've been given two different kind of prenatals at this point [prenate elite, and vitafol] both of which cause me to have extreme headaches. when i visited my ob she told me that i can take two flintstones instead but i mean.. that's a sh*tload of vitamins. especially if i'm eating well to begin with... i almost feel like maybe it could do more harm then good especially when it comes to vitamin A [which in flintstones is NOT all beta carotene] I guess what i'm asking is. What's the point. women have been making perfectly healthy babies since the dawn of time without these vitamins... and since things like spina bifida develop 28 days after conception and i'm nearly 11 weeks now.. i just think it's a little pointless

Its completly up to you whether or not to take them.
I took them very little with my first pregnancy my twins were born healthy at 36wks5days and were 6lbs3oz and 5lbs8oz (which is bigger and better than alot of singletons)
with my second pregnancy I took them maybe 3 times while pregnant and my son was born very healthy at 39wks1day weighing 9lbs2oz.
so its not a MUST for a baby to turn out healthy. Just make sure you are eating right!

Mainly, your prenatal vitamins are an insurance policy against those conditions.

So, just like you pay for insurance even when you don't necessarily need it...you take your prenatal vitamin to insure your baby against these problems.

Isn't it Folic Acid that is so important more then anything else? You are fortunate to be able to eat organic and obviously take care of your body with the proper whole food nutrients. Eating your way is so expensive compared to the junk the average person is consuming. Knowlegde is also key. My cousin did what you are doing and her kids were extremely healthy. She tested herself along the way to see if her food was supplying enough nutrients for two people and luckily it was. Fast food, microwave and frozen dinner babies need prenatals.

I have questioned the same thing. I admit I forget to take my prenatals every single day but why not give my baby a little help and help me from losing energy, hair, and my glow because the baby takes all the nutrients from me. We should be grateful for technology and that today's medicine doesn't consistently use leaches and bleeding out as a method to cure disease like it used to.

its your choice, but is poping a couple of pills that could possibly give your baby an extra advantage is such a big hassle to you? my perscription vitamins with my first made me sick but the drug store ones didnt so i took those instead. i feel like a couple of pills every morning is a small scrifice just for the odd chance that it helps my baby. adn i wouldnt take flinstones i've never heard anything good bout those even for kids, and they're loaded with sugars

and think even if you eat well you're sharing those vitamins from food with your baby, you need a certain amount and so does the baby...and if your only eating the same amount as before one or both of you are lacking.

You may eat well, but are you used to eating for two? The baby is taking nutrients from you. If he/she takes all the nutrients from you, what are you left with? Prenatals are not a must but strongly recommended. Vitamin c helps with the amniotic sac, calcium helps for a strong skeletal system. They cannot hurt either. Obviously your ob wants you to have them, I have to take two vitamins a day.

Well, the most important thing is folic acid, and obviously it's most important very early on in pregnancy. I'd recommend taking half a daily dose if you are convinced that your diet is strong enough to make up the other half. I wouldn't give them up all together, though, because your baby's nutrition is just not something to mess around with.

It's your choice not to take them, however, to help ensure good development of your baby, to me it is SO worth it. I have been taking CVS brand prenatals - no headaches, or upset stomach with them.

You do not have to take them, it is completely up to you. They mainly benefit you because your baby takes all the nutrients he/she needs. I did not take them very often with my son and he was born perfectly healthy at 36 weeks 5 days (I got very very sick from an infection from my water leaking). I did fine without them except my teeth suffered due to the lack of calcium.

i didnt take them with my last pregnancy. the vitamins are for YOUR benifit really. the baby gets what he needs. i felt great without them, but my teeth suffered. mabey this could've been avoided with vitamins. im not sure.you could take a whole foods based vitamin, one that s not synthetic, that youre body recognizes as it breaks down.
