King Kong, himself, is not real. He was, however, based upon a real ape named Henry McClannahan, who was a pitcher for the 1911 Boston Red Sox. There is one other fact about Henry that no one seems to know. That is, that he was the ONLY ape to ever star in Barnum and Bailey's circus AND pitch in the major leagues. Royce Burley also was an ape that played second base for the '26 Phillies, but he was never in a circus of any kind.
