i have a 85 chevy c10, 305v8. 135,000 miles.
Its been really cold here lately and my truck is starting to smoke.
When I first start the truck in the morning I get the normal white smoke/condensation. Well after about 5 mins the white smoke/condensation goes away and it starts puffing alot of black smoke and the idle starts messing up. After about 10-15 good hard revs of the engine it goes away and the idle goes back to normal. It does this everytime I start it when its cold.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

The smoke smells real strong. And the odor stays on our skin and clothes.

sounds like you are burning rich ( burning to much fuel) , if its a carburetor then your float may be stuck from the cold weather, if its fuel injection then you fuel pressure regulator may be going out..there easy to replace. get your self a maint. book at a part store , there about 20 bucks. you can learn a lot in the book, theres a trouble shooting guide if you get confused...good luck

Basically for a gasoline fuel motor, white smoke means water or antifreeze burning, blue smoke is oil, and black smoke is way too much fuel is being burned. This was a factory carburated motor so I would be looking at the choke setting, the vacuum choke unloader, and the choke heater of which type there are several. Most of the time the vacuum choke initial unloader pot is either misadjusted or faulty. Or someone screws around with the actual choke adjustment. There is another system that heats the intake which should also be checked if yours is equipped with that. It has a valve that directs exhaust over the intake to heat the carb.

Black smoke means that your engine is running real rich. This is also affecting your idle because there is to much gas entering the carb and its not being completely burned. I would take some carb cleaner and clean our the carb. While the engine is running. Spray it into the carb while you are manually reving the engine.. Also you may want to clean the choke while you are it. A stuck choke will dump fuel in the carb. The float is probably sticking as well. You will have disassemble the top of the carb and to view the float...to make sure that it's working properly. Good Luck

Your p/u is carbureted, and SOME black smoke is normal when starting up cold, especially in real cold weather.

If the engine smokes a LOT and dies, the vacuum pull-off is shot allowing the choke to completely close.

Have the choke adjustment and vacuum pull-off checked by someone who knows what they are doing.

Cold engine idle circuit valve is malfunctioning or the EGR valve is bad. We had to replace the EGR valve on our chevy and that took care of the problem.
