There is a sound card or motherboard driver that will need to be installed for this to work. You will need to figure out what you have and go to the manufacturer's web site to download and install the driver.

Well I have windows vista and on my laptop it automatically selects the one which is plugged in... You could try plugging the headphones in, and look at the bottom right of your taskbar, you will see a little sound icon (its for your sound controls) right click on it, and select playback devices. Right click once on your headphones, and select from the drop down box 'set as default device' the headphones should now work. You will have to change this when changing between the two speakers & headphones. Hope this helps til you sort your problem out.

Not that I have an answer for you.. just chiming in I have the same problem. The front jacks test fine (Headphone Properties Advanced tab test) , so the earbuds I'm using works. But the sounds for applications still come out of the built in speakers, not the earbuds. I would think that plugging in something into the jack would automatically disable the speakers, and enable the jack.

edit:
omg.. I just fixed it. :-)

On that same tab, with the test, there's a section called exclusive mode. Both boxes were checked. I unchecked them both and it still didn't work.

Then I just checked just the top one, and voila... game sounds started coming out of my headphones!

Hope this helps you too!

another edit:

If I unplug my earbuds in the middle of a program, the program errors out. Seems like you can't just plug your headset in and out at a whim... you gotta do it before you start your program. I'm using a new HP laptop and this is my first time using Vista, so I don't know if it's an HP hardware defect, or a Vista defect. (or me just not knowing what checkbox to check or uncheck in some setup menu... somewhere...)

The headphone may have volume adjustment, be sure to plug all the way in > adjust headphone volume control > adjust the PC volume output control
If this does not work out, try the head phone with other computer to test the headphone.

I have had the same problem and I fixed it by going into the control panel and then into sound. there are many setting in there including turning on and off the front sound ports. have a good look around, try all the advanced setting and all. I am just not sure where I found it, but it is there somewhere

Hope this helps
