In the U.K. The police are looking for a minimum of 70% light transmission through the front 'drop' glasses.
Most cars now have tints already in them,so in answer to your question, don't tint your fronts and you wont get grief from the 'fuzz!'
They could get you with a 'fixed penalty' notice that's £60 and three points!
P.s you can go as dark as you like on the back 'half' of your car! Don't go darker than 20% on the rear window as reversing at night can be a 'chore!'

I think it depends on where you live but I was pulled over for window tint on my front windows (drivers side and passenger side) and the officer said you cant have any tint on those two front windows no matter what shade. That guy may have been trying to get a little extra money out of you...

You can have a slight tint only, unless the windows are tinted in the factory, then it can still be quite dark, although you have to be able to see through it. My cars have all got it, and I've not had a problem.
If you have added a film and the police stop you and say it's too dark, they will ask you to have it taken off, and send you on your way.
I'm in the UK

yes it is illegal to tint your driver and passenger windows...but it depends on what percent of light goes through..usually 40% light transmission is legal..the back windows in most states can be tinted darker but every state is different, in all states its illegal to tint your front windshield...last if its illegal you will usually get a ticket and most inspectors will not inspect the car instead give you a reject tag untill you get it fixed

It's ALWAYS been illegal to tint the front windows of your car so darkly that an oncoming driver can not see your face.
Where I have lived, the only people who get their windshield tinted that darkly are either drug dealers or gays.
