Always ask your own doctor. It will depend on the amount of nutrition the child is getting besides the formula. Formula is full of nutrients. Until they are on a balanced diet, it is probably not a good idea to stop the formula.
If you are switching to milk, do so slowly...at first start mixing 1/4 milk per 3/4 formula for a few days....and slowly increase. The make up of Milk is VERY different than formula and if given "cold turkey" can mess up their digestive sytem (temporarily). Really...who wants a baby with diarrhea?!

Doesn't matter too much to me cause the only milk my son is getting is breastmilk until he's at LEAST a year. But, this may be helpful for others. It all depends on how you feel. I just don't think someone should start their child on whole milk because a doc says so either. A lot of docs don't know what they're talking about either way.

I just breastfeed... so much easier and so much less to worry about. I don't know the last time (or first for that matter) that breastmilk was recalled! You don't have to worry about toxic cans or the stuff that goes into formula... And I'm not trying to knock mothers who use formula, I'm just saying the truth of the matter is that you just don't have to worry about all that stuff when you nurse! Whole milk at 9 months... ehhh, not a great idea!

i suppose its a parents choice, but you have to remember what did parents use before formula was easily accesible?....milk (and breast milk of course, but some women have trouble nursing) me and my siblings were brought up on milk and only one out of 4 of us had allergies and asthma (but my dad smoked at the time of her birth too...so you decide what caused the allergies; milk cigarettes....maybe genes)
i breast feed and formula feed, and by about 9 months i would start mixing a little milk with their formula to get them adjusted. never had any problems. it's all up to the indvidual and the baby and the dr. there is no right or wrong when it comes to things like that.

Thanks for the info.! My baby is only 13 days old, but I have an almost 4 year old son and he was started on milk, well, soymilk, at about 9 1/2 months. He did just fine with it. I guess it's all in how much you trust your ped., so many opinions out there with what's safe and unsafe to do, you really have to find that right doctor, you know! Thanks again!

My friend did the same thing and her children had awful problems and milk allergies and she got to buy goat milk for her kids until they were over 2! Talk about a pricey mistake!

i think it depends on the doctor. i started giving my daughter milk at 10 months but she still had formula. my grandma said that when she brought my mom and uncle home from the hospital she gave them milk... i wouldnt do it that early tho!

There are good docs and there are bad docs as there are also safe formula cans and unsafe formula cans.

My pediatrician told my mother that it was OK to let my brother cry it out for up to 45 minutes.
Just because information comes from a doctor doesn't mean it's good.
