M3 cars in general get driven a lot more harshly than regular 3 series (and why shouldn't they be?). When buying a used M3, buyers are always exposed to higher risk of hidden damages than buying a regular 3 series.

Front and rear subframe damage is hard to see unless you drive it, listen out for it, and get it checked at the dealer. Such damage could easily cost $4000 or more to fix (weld).

Engine, tranny, control arm/ball joints, shock/struts all need to be checked thoroughly.

Note that if you already know you need $1000 in work, it is safe to factor in at least 25-50% for extra "hidden" work.

If your are absolutely SURE that $1000 is all you need to spend on repairs, then $8000-$8600 is within the ballpark. But if I were you, I'd be willing to spend $200 to get the car thoroughly checked at the dealer.

A coolair overall performance intake (ok&N or such), greater exhaust, consistent with possibility a MOD chip will probable get you to 250 to 260 hp. yet 3 hundred you would be finding in any respect the above and a series of custom cams. yet another harder direction could be to place a turbocharger on it- i would not advise a quicker for an M3, yet you will hit the 300hp mark very nicely.

Are you an enthusiast? Are you a fan of these cars? Do you like reading about cars and working on your own cars?

If the answer to any of those questions is "no". Don't buy this car. These cars aren't that reliable, and my friends who own them bought them knowing that. There's tons of info about these cars on the web since there is a strong enthusiast community, but if you don't wrench, this car will cost you a fortune in repairs.
