Besides education, a school provides some other elements in their leaning environment. One of the aspect is social aspect. AS school gives them the space the the chance to interact and learn to live with other as well as to learn along their friends.

Children from war-torn country and children who gets a chance to school will come out as very different people. That's true.

Sorry, I don't think "school" is important in educating anyone. The important thing is the "education" part. That can happen anywhere and any time. It does not require a formal setting. In fact the best education comes from real life situations. That's why we've chosen to educate ours at home (and at the store, on vacations, at my husband's workplace, at the barn down the street, in the library, etc.). Most students forget the things they learn only in the classroom not long after they leave them, but people who learn from experiences they've lived remember forever.

I think that Tina's points are valid for her family and how great that she could make that choice but the sad reality is that more and more kids are coming up short at home. School may be the only place that they have a stable schedule, rules to follow, positive interaction with peers and adults. School may be the only place where they are going to learn how to read and write. They will learn that there are consequences for their actions and maybe that they like art class or helping other people. All of these things are education not just names and dates from social studies books.
