Every time i start up my system Laptop with VistaHome premium 32 bit I am prompted in the task bar that updates are available for my norton antivirus, click yes/no to install.
I just find it hard to beleive that its that many updates avaialble to install i can click no and go into my norton contrl and it says everything is up to date and no updates are needed. I was thiinking this could be caused as the system is loading Norton is not fully loaded yet and it is prompting that updates are available but it actually from the program not fully loaded making it think that. Is this possible. It is just so annoying and I can go in and ry to manually install updates it will search and say all updates are installed and no further updates are available. then if i restart my computer it asks again. any suggestions , thoughts, ideas etc. Thanks.

I am not asking your opinion on Nortoin. so please dont waste your time and mine trying to convince me Norton is junk. I have my reasons for choosing Norton.

I have the same problem with Norton on my laptop. I haven't tried it, but this method should work to remove those irritating reminders. Go to msconfig. Run>msconfig. Click startup. Look for all Norton related programs. If you have something like updater, scheduler etc. uncheck them. Reboot.
There should be some option in Norton main console too. I don't have my laptop with Norton with me now, so I am not very sure that these methods work. Just try it yourself.

bob67cam was right when he said that norton sucks, but saying that mcAfee is just the same as norton is not right. also, the antiviruses that he was recommending is not so good, in fact i tried testing the nod32 on several computers through online and manual virus exploitations. 10 out of 10 computers failed the test because nod32 were not able to detect 65% of the virus that were used as subjects. also, the remaining 35% were not properly handled by the software. several system crashes followed.
about norton, it cant detect 30% of the test subjects that i used. it also affects the performance of the PC since it requires huge memory space (RAM). almost 55% of ram goes to norton if you are using 1GB of memory on vista. that is too reasonable for making your system very very slow.
the norton's main software is not yet stable. if you would notice, updets would always require a restart. it is because some of the updates are not for definition, but for the software bug fix of itself. i suggest the you do away with norton. it would ruin your productivity, as well as waste your time and money.
Switch to mcAfee if you can. it would guarantee 98.5 f protection based on tests. it gains the highiest percentage of success among all the antivirus software that my colleagues and I tested. btw, we used same test procedures on all softwares that we tested. it updates regularly to ensure the integrity of virus definitions. it also updates automatically and then releases a note everytime it has been updated so that you wont be disturbed when doing other things. compared to norton, it uses very little ram but it functions greatly, especially the activeShield that it has to give you real-time virus protection. it scans every file that comes in to your computer simultaneously without disrupting your current task. it also observes the programs that make use of the internet. all of those processes doesn't require user manipulation, instead, everything is automatic and hidden. windows wont pop-up unless you really need to know what is happening with your computer. one more thing, once it sees a virus, it can be handed correctly, through different processes.

no offense to nortons but ...well ok im hugely offending nortons and mcafee are in the same boat..to me they are nothing more then a false sense of security
if u want a really good antivirus try kaspersky..is what i use on my internet pc or nod32 what i use on my gamer pc nod32 is super fast n dont hardy effect anything but it has missed some stuff and kaspersky catches everything but its a bit slower the nod32..however its still 600% fasster then nortons ot mcafee

Uninstall Norton and use AVG Free instead. Most virus creators specifically aim to circumvent Norton's any way. Norton's AV seems worse than useless to me.

Nortons is only good with when it comes to being skilled in marketing a junk product.

Wait till you decide to remove Nortons, you are going to find that add/remove only removes part of the program. And you are left with over 375 fragments of Nortons/symantec glued to your registry keys, files/folders and hidden in your subsystem. (You will be playing total hell trying to remove, as they will cause conflict to your system).
