Do you use it WITH detergent or does it have to be used alone? Does it work as detergent or does it only soften clothes?

How does "i use it in a downy ball" help?

No you do not pour it in with the detergent or in place of detergent. It goes in at the start of the rinse cycle. You can buy a dispenser ball so you won't have to keep track of when the rinse cycle begins. If you are using a dispenser ball you fill it up to the line and close it put in at the start of your wash cycle with the detergent, the ball has a plug that opens at the right time by itself. Some washing machines have a dispenser built in to the agitator, ( the part of the washer that's in the middle and turns back and forth) If you have one of these types of washers just put the softener in the opening of your agitator at start of your wash cycle.

The washer has a special well to mix fabric softener with water. In mine, it's at the top of the agitator. At the laundromat, you usually have to add it manually during the rinse cycle in the special area under the lid on the left. Fabric softener removes extra soap in the rinse water, and also softens the clothes. It doesn't take the place of detergent. If you spill too much fabric softener into the soap water, the soap bubbles will disappear.

my washer has its own little compartment for the softner. If you don't have one on yours then you can always pick up one of those downey balls for about $3 at the store.
You want to use detergent as well but the idea is the softner will reduce the static cling, make the clothes smell better and makes the fabrics smell softer. It must use some type of coating or something because I never use them with towels since it makes the towels less absorbent.

It goes in the first rinse. Use a dispenser if your machine has one, otherwise you need to watch it closely so you know when the first rinse is starting. Never put it in with the deterent.
