we have lost the real christmas spirit! its all about whose kids have "the best" toys, electronics etc. and if their kids dont get teh best then the kids yell at the parents, who in turn are worried about their kids creating a "scene" in public, or being humiliated cause they werent able to "keep up with the Jones". i remember when it was fun and jolly, who cares that you didnt get the newest toy out there, you got to be with family and friends who loves you no matter what. i know we all think its a pain in the ***, cause poor uncle tom is trashed, grandpa is telling yet another story. well.. thats family for you. rich or poor, they are all the same, in one tortoreus (sp?) form or another.
another thing is traditions are thrown out the window! we spend more than we make just to keep up and in turn take it out on the sales clerk cause he didnt come up with the $200 item that we really cant afford but our kid cant live without (even though its forgotten with in a month or so)
so "Joy to the World" and peace to the sales clerk!
(i was one at Wal-mart! the happier i acted, the more pissed that mom got cause i could smile while she was fuming! but, got her smiling again by finding a solution, or she was too pissed of and couldnt report me cause i had done nothing but smile!) good luck!

Well, Hellboy, there are always rude people who will cross our path in life.
I have to admit, when I do hear a retail clerk being treated badly, I just cringe. However, I cannot change anyone else's behavior...and neither can you.
The only thing I can change is me.
So when I see this type of behavior, I remind myself why I choose NOT to be like that, no matter how tired or ill I may
be feeling, no matter how much of a time crunch I may be
experiencing---because it is my personal issue, not that
of the sales clerk.
I do wish people would practice more kindness and manners, but I fear at times those days of etiquette and
caring about how we treat others are disappearing....fast.
I think that those who are rude and obnoxious are always
going to have a tendency to be that way.....but added stress and pressure that many have during the Christmas holiday
bring out the worst, rather than the best, sad to say.
Perhaps during the holidays there are just more shoppers out there more often (people forget this or that and then have
to return to the store and are often agitated about that, as well)......
However, there is truly no excuse for bad behavior.
Those of us who try to be kind and courteous wish others
would do the same, but the best we can do is to be extra
kind when we see the person in front of us lose their temper
with a clerk who is trying his or her best.....
A good lesson in this challenging holiday season for you,
Hellboy, may be how strong in character can you be in the
face of so much yelling, screaming, and cursing.....when
the stress is high for you, can you continue to be kind
and mannerly in return......I hope so.
I wish you all the best and happy holidays!

I can very much relate and empathize with you here. It is sad because it makes you dread the holidays instead of look forward to them. If you and your husband feel like that you must go to keep the peace then here are a few suggestions. You already know they are going to act rude, so just rise above it and don't let them get to you. They are the ones with the problem and they are the ones who are going to have a miserable holiday because they insist on having drama. Let them act rude and don't participate in it. Decide now that you are going to have a great holiday and you are not going to let any of them have the power to ruin it for you. In fact go out of your way act cheerful and friendly. Let everyone know that you are having a great time and "kill them with kindness". This will not only make them feel stupid for acting so childish but when they see that their efforts to upset you are not working they may quit being so rude and move onto something else. I really feel for you because I have gone through the same thing and know how much it sucks. This is the best way I have found to deal with these types of people. Just remember, you can't control the way they act but you can control the way you act or react to them. Don't allow them to get you down. Remember, they are the ones with the problem. Best of luck to you and hope you have a wonderful holiday!

I used to work in retail and I hear ya. The rude and obnoxious women (and some men) who shop this time of the year are unbelievable! Good luck. Only 12 more days left!

I used to work in retail, but I didn't have the problems that you are having. I know that people feel lots of stress during the holidays because they have high expectations of themselves and what they can deliver. They also know that their kids and family may be anticipating certain gifts from them, and that adds a lot of stress also.
But don't let these scrooges dampen your own spirit ! Just be nice and polite to them and somewhere down the road it's going to get to them that they were rude to you.

I don't think they are any ruder than they are any other time of the year. People may be ruder if they are in a crowded store or something like that but generally i don't think you have a spike in rudeness at this time of year. Wait until may and go to a crowded place and see if people are acting rude. I bet they will.

STRESS!!! Or because this is a time when you remember your family and loved ones the most. And if their gone.... well don't you think that's a pretty good reason to be cranky? They could be feeling very LONELY,:*( especially seeing so many happy people around them. They may even be a little envious. >:-/

The reason it seems to be mainly women is they are the ones doing the shopping.
It's a stressful time of year.

shopping during the holidays is stressful. trying to come up with the "best" present for the person on their list..ect ect...the fact that they KNOW they are spending money they dont have..the fact that they KNOW their credit cards are going to get maxed out and their payments are gonna be through the roof. thats probably why theyre so stressed. sucks to be you during this time of year...hang in there champ..its almost over........
