arent they in different countries??? Amsterdam is in Germany and Rotterdam is in the Netherlands so I dont know why they would have the same laws.

Edit: Oops! you are right! they are both in the netherlands, I had a friend who was stationed in the army in Rotterdam and He LOVED it there, if that helps. He says the night life is great and the women are hot in fact he met his wife there I guess they party a lot there.

Personally i think amsterdam has more history and a nicer vibe than rotterdam, just because of the old buildings and stuff. Rotterdam is more modern and has more modern art and buildings to see, people are pretty much nice all around the country, rotterdam is more urban as far as people goes and amsterdam is just a big melting pot and has more tourists. the laws are pretty much the same it's just that alcohol is very much forbidden to be seen on the streets in rotterdam, in amsterdam they are more laid back as far as those laws go.
but you could visit both really, i mean we have a great train system here in holland and it's only a train ride apart from each other, while riding the train you can see the country a bit as well, do as the dutch, commute hihihihi only not too early, too damn crowded.

have fun and enjoy your trip over here.

Rotterdam has been bombed in WWII, and has been rebuild since, so there is no old center.
It is the most modern build of the big cities in the Netherlands.
Amsterdam has been a city since about 725 years ago, and there are many old buildings, and the shape of the city is still the same as it has been a long time.
But within those differences they are not that much different.
Laws and traditions are the same, shops are the same or alike, both towns have a lot of museums, both towns have a lot of nightlife.

I think that Amsterdam because of the older buildings has more of an exotic feel for you, but as you have to be in Rotterdam for your show, take the time to really see it.

Instead of going to Amsterdam you can also go to one of the old towns much closer to Rotterdam, I would say Delft is a good one. Just a short hop on the train, (same line as to Amsterdam, just make sure you have a train that also stops there,) and you can see one of the old Dutch town.

Laws : the equal (Amsterdam and Rotterdam are towns, no longer their possess states. Both are facet of The Netherlands) Thus, smoking regulations are the equal. Nightlife : equivalent Festivals : there you'll discover a few variations, assess out what you decide on. (i`m no longer into gala's so much myself). Rotterdam is a well choice, however does no longer have the 'comfortable' inside-town feeling that Amsterdam does have. This because of WWII bombings, destroying so much of it.

National laws are the same, but local laws may be slightly different... In general, Amsterdam is focused more on tourists, Rotterdam more on trade/transport... If you don't mind seeing more tourist than Dutchies, go to Amsterdam... If you don't want to see so many tourists or many old buildings, go to Rotterdam... If you want to see not too many tourists but very nice old buildings, come to The Hague...

Let us know what kind of stuff you're interested in seeing and we'll give you better advice than this...

Rotterdam is actually a very nice and boring city south of Amsterdam. AMS is where you want to go, it's where the night life and lots of young people are. There are clubs, museums, canals/tours, AnneFrankHaus (a must see), the Heineken brewery, and trains to everywhere else in Holland. The visitor centers are very helpful, and there are cheap-ish hotels outside the central train station. You'll love it. But you can skip R'Dam if you are limited on time (except for possibly the WaterWorks at the harbor--they are amazing).

Rotterdam is Hollands biggest seaport town.
Lots of merchandise for the European market is imported via seaports like Rotterdam, Antwerpen, Hamburg, Bremen.
But there are also big shopping malls.
