A lot of people try eastern Alameda/Contra Costa Counties. They are close to sf, but aren't too expensive, though they have been going up in price. You could try somewhere as far as stockton/Manteca/Tracy, just over the hills in the valley, but that would be a loong *** drive. Fresno is a 3 or 4 hour drive, I would not do that.

Okay, here we go. Berkeley and Oakland (Rockridge, Lake Merritt): crunchy granola/intellectual/great food (Berkeley), Rockridge, Lake Merritt: Younger, less granola, still good food and reasonably upper middle class.

Burlingame, San Mateo: Middle class, families. Kind of a wasteland culturally/intellectually. Known as "the peninsula", doesn't get good again until near Palo Alto, which is silicon valley central: smart, but sedate. expensive, but engineering-oriented. not too culturally interesting, but smart, don't you know (Stanford's there, after all).

SF: Russian Hill: windy, big houses and many condos, but posh. Pacific Heights: Robber Baron houses, very established, expensive. Better weather than Russian Hill, less windy. Richmond/ Sunset: middle class, families, foggy. Mission: best weather, used to be sketchy, some gentrification. South of Market: Hip, gentrified, lots of action with restaurants, clubs, museum of modern art, but also sketchiness of Tenderloin very nearby. Castro: gay friendly, expensive, good weather. Haight: still hippie-ish, but lots of boutiques, restaurants and clubs. weather is okay, but not great.

Marin: Sausalito: singles, older, expensive. Mill Valley: GREAT TOWN (I live here), lots of culture (film festival, arts festival), mix of creative types (musicians, writers, actors) , entrepreneurs (Smith and Hawkins, Banana Republic, Benefit Cosmetics), and professionals, unfortunately rather expensive, but heterogeneous rather than homogeneous. Tiburon: More sedate, family-oriented, also expensive. San Anselmo: little funkier, but still expensive, family oriented. Longer drive to SF. Fairfax: the most hippie-leftover in Marin, but, yes, still rather pricey.

Any more questions??

San Francisco has many distinct neighborhoods. I don't think anybody can tell you which you would like the best. Though there are probably area's you certainly would not like to live in.

well, the mission is an up and coming place to be, it seems to be warmer there all the time then the rest of the city. It's probably cheaper.
