Some of these can be quite lenghty in the winter. especially in these parts. What on earth do we do with our 3 tropical fish tanks if this happens again? Keeping it warm and preventing the bacteria from dying in the filters?

there are battery back up systems, while they are ment for computers and the like, they will work for an aquarium as well. this might not be the best option as most of them only last for a couple hours.

Actually more of a concern is the oxygen levels in the tank will be depleted fairly quick. I went through hurricane Charlie years ago, power was out for 3 days. Fortunately, I was able to get a generator, and hooked up an air stone to the tanks. They do make a battery operated air pump, comes with the tubing and air stone, and real cheap. That is the ideal thing to have on hand for those kinds of problems:

That's the cheaper ones, they make some that plug in to the wall and when the power goes off, they automatically kick in.

If the power goes off, and you can use your water, I would frequent daily water changes to help keep the ammonia from building up and I wouldn't feed them during that time. For heating the tanks....not sure what you could do with that one other then using a generator of some sort to run a small heater either in the room or in the tank.

EDIT: OMG Chopper that is just so wrong lol.....

Wrap some towels around the tank and cover it. You could also get a seperate gas heater to keep the room warm.

This just happend to us over the Summer..a thunderstorm knocked out power for two days---most pet stores sell battery powered bubblers for when things like this happen. That is pretty much the one thing you have to worry about. (the oxygen)..
